The Migration to MySQL

April 3rd, 2009

WARNING:This post is chalked full of computer stuff. For those of you who are not computer people, I’ve provided this translation…

Translation for anyone out there that isn’t a geek: I’m changing the way that I keep track of the games, schedules, and, ultimately, the way my computer rankings will work this fall. While I will still release the standard weekly ‘official’ rankings, the way I’m setting it up will allow me to publish a list of rankings that updates itself with the end of each game. So, say, it’s Saturday toward the end of October, say about 6:00 P.M. Eastern. You’ll be able to look at how the rankings have been effected by the games that have already happened that day. This is pretty big, because as far as I’m aware, no other computer ranking system does this. Or, at least, they don’t release these ‘unofficial’ results to the people who follow them. I’m having a hard time sitting still just thinking about it…

Ok, now for those of you interested in the actual function of the page, (i.e. anyone out there that has a little bit of geek in them, as I do) you might be interested to know that the previous ’static’ conference and team pages were all driven by javascripts created by my custom rankings database of my creation. Once the day’s work was through, I would upload them onto the server. They are now being migrated to a MySQL database that lives on the server. This has meant me learning not only how to use MySQL but also PHP. I realize that these are not exactly ‘new’ technologies, but I had never used either before, and so I’m a bit proud of my advancement. So what if I’m a bit of a Luddite. Anyway, I’ve now abandon the offline database completely, and am in the process of rebuilding the list of games and, as they are in place, the old javascipts will go away. I plan on running the rankings system this fall from the MySQL database, which, as I mentioned above, will give the somewhat interesting effect of letting me easily release a dynamic ranking as each game completes. If anyone out there knows of another computer rankings system that does this, please let me know, as I’m sort of interested in knowing if I’m the only one doing this. As far as I know right now, I think that I will be come this fall.

Lou Saban dies at age 87

March 29th, 2009

It’s with a sad heart that we report the passing of Lou Saban, who died today at this North Myrtle Beach home. Saban played college football at Indiana University and in the professional leagues with the Cleveland Browns. In 1950, he went into the coaching ranks as the head coach of Case Institute. He then moved into assistant roles at the University of Washington and Northwestern University. Saban was named the head coach at Northwestern in 1955, a position he would hold for two years. His final college stop before heading to the pros was with Western Illinois University.

In 1960, Coach Saban began a six year stretch in the American Football League, first with the Boston (later to become the New England) Patriots and the Buffalo Bills. He returned to the NCAA ranks in 1966 with Maryland, before returning to the AFL to coach the Denver Broncos through their transition into the NFL. In 1972, he returned to the Buffalo Bills.

After his days in the pros were over, Lou Saban was far from finished coaching. He again returned to the NCAA ranks to lay the brickwork for the University of Miami, helping to recruit Jim Kelly. He then spent a season at Army, and a season and a half at Central Florida.

1989 was spent coaching the Bulldogs of Georgetown, South Carolina. 1991 was spent with Peru State College in Nebraska. In 1994, he dived into Arena Football to coach the Milwaukee Mustangs. He finished his career with positions at SUNY Canton and Chowan University in North Carolina.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Joyce and the rest of his family.

Let’s Let the Government Decide! (Part 2)

March 29th, 2009

It looks as if Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson’s trip to Washington to speak out against the BCS may be coming of something. Well, that, and the fact that Utah’s senator Orrin Hatch is still all in a dither about his home-state Utes being left out of last year’s title game. The subcommittee that is looking into fixing the BCS system says that Senator Hatch will attempt to fix the situation with some fancy legislation, but wouldn’t really expand on what that meant. Giving that the investigations are coming from the subcommittee on antitrust, and looking at how the system is set up, I have a hard time believing that they will ultimately successful in changing the system.

Changing? Yes. Fixing? Well, we’ll see. And, again, has Congress fixed the economy, balanced the budget, and stopped screwing me over on taxes yet? I see. Is the BCS really a high priority right now?
