Landrus Adds Gust to Gymnastics Coaching Staff

University of Illinois women’s gymnastics head coach Kim Landrus announced the hiring of Rodney Gust as an assistant coach on Monday. Gust, who owns 16 years of coaching experience, comes to Illinois following a two-year stint as an assistant coach at Yale University. In the gym, he will serve as the vault and floor coach for the Illini.
Gymnastics Adds Three to Class of 2011

Michigan State gymnastics head coach Kathie Klages announced Friday that three additional student-athletes have been accepted to Michigan State and will join the Spartan gymnastics team beginning next fall and compete for the 2011-12 squad. The gymnasts include Ellie Gosselin, Ashley Noll and Carson Tabiolo.

Curtis Named to Academic All-America At-Large Second Team

Fifth-year senior gymnast Sarah Curtis, a biology major enrolled in graduate school, was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® At-Large second team as selected by CoSIDA.

Fernandez Named Second-Team Academic All-American

Senior Melissa Fernandez was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday. Fernandez, who was a first-team Academic All-District honoree, becomes the first Illinois gymnast in program history to be named a second-team Academic All-American.

Three Illini Earn Academic All-District Honors

The 2011 CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District Teams were announced for men’s and women’s at-large categories and three Illinois athletes earned distinction in District Five. Senior gymnast Melissa Fernandez took home first-team All-District honors, while teammate Allison Buckley and tennis player Abe Souza each received All-District second team accolades for the second straight year. First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
NCAA Recognizes Illini Athletics for Academic Progress Rates

Fighting Illini women’s golf and women’s gymnastics earned recognition through the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rates (APR) on Tuesday, receiving Public Recognition Awards for their academic success as a team. The Public Recognition Awards are given on a yearly basis to the teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their APRs.
